What Are General Ph.D. Programs?

Ph.D. Doctor of Philosophy

Ph.D. is an abbreviation that stands for Doctor of Philosophy. Ph.D. studies are the highest level of education. The journey can be exhausting at times, but the final result (your dissertation) is a significant achievement and rewarding event in your life. It’s not a linear process at all and is different for every student or professional. A Ph.D. is the highest academic degree that a student can earn. These doctoral programs allow students to focus their research on an area of interest and can prepare them for careers as researchers, teachers, and scholars. Individuals who are interested in taking advanced courses and conducting academic research in a specific field may enroll in a Ph.D. program.

How IIM Ph.D. differs from General Ph.D. Program?

General Ph.D. focuses more on research and less on holistic course as compared to a Ph.D. from an IIM. General Ph.D. from some other university severely lacks in offering management courses in other areas such as marketing, HR, and OB, etc. While IIMs do very well in this case. Due to the exposure to different management areas, an IIM trained Ph.D. grows faster as compared to a general Ph.D.

Ph.D. from IIM is rigorous coursework which not just exposes students to the field of management but also helps in building a solid foundation. In general, a Ph.D. from any institute grooms you as an independent researcher while Ph.D. from IIM grooms you as a good management educator. However, there do exist some exceptions. So it does not matter whether you are from any B-school or an IIM graduate, you can be both an awesome researcher and a good management educator which is the success of a doctorate degree. All you need is the focus to hit the bull’s eye of your interest.
